- When you receive new tax code notices, please check them or forward them to me. They are usually correct, but can be spectacularly wrong! One client had an unexpected tax bill of £2,000 due to incorrect tax codes. This is most important to people with multiple sources of income, company cars and where circumstances have changed.
- I recommend to all clients and the children of elderly parents to make a comprehensive list of their savings. Even after this is done, there may be gaps. One client had prepared what was believed to be a comprehensive list of savings. When I visited to check the list, I discovered one account had been omitted which held a substantial sum of money.
- Interest rates have started to increase, Birmingham Midshires was recently offering 1.3% with easy access. As expected, many of the main banks are slow in increasing savings rates. Shop around for good deals. Conversely mortgage rates are increasing.
- Individuals who are cashing in pension funds are often subject to large estimated tax bills, which are excessive. One happy client had a significant rebate from HMRC in 10 days. Please contact me if this applicable.
- With people changing jobs frequently, many have their pension pots scattered with a number of former employers / pension companies. Please make a list if this applies to you. Transfers to a main single fund can usually be made, but it is a very slow process. This applies to both older and younger clients who may be in a few jobs during their careers.
- Remain Scam aware. In addition to letters from scammers claiming to be from HMRC, recent efforts have included people claiming to be from TV Licensing and Whats App wanting bank account details / payment.
- I carry out ad hoc work for high net worth clients who require a personal service. The 2 most recent who contacted me were previously with PWC and Deloittes.
